In-Depth Mordanting for Natural Dyeing
Natural dye enthusiasts! This is your opportunity to push your skills (and palettes!) to the next level with a deep dive into the world of natural color-modifiers and color-binders known as mordants. Mastering the art and science of mordanting allows the sophisticated dyer to achieve a spectrum of colors from a single plant, simply by preparing cotton and silk fabric in different ways. This class will lead students through numerous natural mordants from both the mineral and plant worlds. Students will leave with a journal of samples for each mordant that have been dipped into color from one dye plant as well as larger cotton and silk pieces.
Contemporary Hand Quilting
Curious about quilting, but intimidated by the scale and commitment of traditional projects? This class offers beginning stitchers the opportunity to dive into the world of modern hand quilting in an accessible format. Focusing on design, palette, and a variety of hand sewing techniques, students will design and sew their own quilted piece. But don’t let your mind stop at quilt squares! The options are endless: tool pouch, pillow case, eye mask, needle holder, and the list goes on and on. Students are encouraged to bring in their own cotton or linen fabrics to incorporate alongside the naturally dyed fabric pieces provided in class.
